David Kovel Presents World Peace and Liberty award to Justice Sotomayor at World Law Congress
SANTO DOMINGO – As general counsel of the World Jurist Association, KM Partner David Kovel presented the act of conferral of the World Peace and Liberty award to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor during the World Law Congress in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The World Peace and Liberty award is considered the Nobel Prize of Law and has been awarded to, among others, Winston Churchill, René Cassin, Nelson Mandela, H.M. King Felipe VI of Spain, Ruth Bather Ginsburg, Andrew Young and the Colombian people represented by their President Iván Duque, and the European Commission represented by its president Ursula von der Leyen.
The event attracted more than 2,000 world leaders including heads of State, chief justices, justices (including U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor), judges, academics, notaries, registrars, lawyers, law students, and jurists. Topics addressed included human rights, financial litigation, education, constitutionalism, intellectual property, free journalism, democracy, and others.
In addition to his presentation of the award to Justice Sotomayor, Mr. Kovel also spoke on financial trends and regulatory compliance in international commercial arbitration. Mr. Kovel’s co-panelists included Rafael Tripero, Managing Partner at Cremades & Calvo-Sotelo Abogados, Binwu Qin, Professor at the Faculty of Law of Xiangtan University, Kehinde Oyewo, Legal assistant at the Moboluwaduro Chamber, Robert Valdez, Lawyer and Law Professor & Trustee of the World Law Foundation, Patrick Barrera Sweeney, Managing Partner of Barrera Andrade Abogados, Alberto Reyes-Sánchez, Partner at Guzmán Ariza Abogados y Consultores, and Arlette Rodríguez Bonnet, Coordinator of the Law School of the University of the Caribbean (UNICARIBE).
The World Jurist Association (WJA), an American NGO based in Washington, DC, with special consultative status to the United Nations, has celebrated the World Law Congress biennial congresses around the world since 1965, all of which have focused on the promotion of the Rule of Law as a guarantor of freedom and development for nations.
